Cities offer decreasing space for above-ground development to serve human activity needs and suffer from the struggle of requiring continuous and ever-growing amounts of energy. The subsurface is opening aup a new era for urban environments, with almost endless reconfigurable capabilities. Empowered by advances in construction techniques, technologies, and sensing, subsurface infrastructures inclluding parking garages, metro lines, underground tunnels, and pedways can be transformed into massive sources of renewable thermal energy. In this manner, conventional subsurface infrastructures become energy infrastructures, providing unprecedented opportunities for powering cities with renewable thermal energy and store general thermal energy, from the building to the district scales. This short-course will focus on three aspects of this urban innovation: concepts, design principles and operational opportunities behind the transformation of subsurface infrastructures into energy sources and storage means. The course is organized by experts in the conceptual development, analysis, design, and application of subsurface energy infrastructures, aiming to provide scientific and technical competence about an exciting opportunity for present and future cities.

The course will take place via Zoom.
