Groundbreaking ceremony of the project MehrSpur Zürich–Winterthur
Brüttener Tunnel: Amberg Engineering contributes to the future of Swiss rail mobility

The MehrSpur Zürich–Winterthur project reflects this vision. A major milestone has now been reached with the official groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of construction for one of Switzerland’s most important rail infrastructure projects.
SBB CFF FFS is expanding the rail corridor between Zurich and Winterthur from two to four tracks, permanently eliminating a central bottleneck in the Swiss rail network. The core element of this ambitious project is the Brüttener Tunnel, which will increase capacity, improve reliability and shorten travel times. The expansion will benefit Zurich’s S-Bahn services as well as long-distance passenger and freight transport throughout Switzerland.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Bassersdorf, at the centre of the 30-kilometre construction corridor between Zurich and Winterthur. In the future, trains will travel around 20 metres below ground through the new Brüttener Tunnel, with the site serving as the main construction base during the tunnel works.
