Work begins on the major project "MehrSpur Zurich–Winterthur"
The way is now clear for the expansion of one of Switzerland’s most important and heavily used rail corridors. At its heart lies the approximately 9 km-long Brütten Tunnel, which, with its two single-track tubes, will create an efficient and robust link between Zurich and Winterthur. Particular challenges include integrating the project into existing rail operations and dealing with the complex geological and structural constraints of the urban environment.
The project client is SBB CFF FFS, which is thereby permanently eliminating a major bottleneck in the Swiss rail network. We at Amberg Engineering are delighted to continue supporting the construction in the planning phase alongside our partners ILF Consulting Engineers, the Emch+Berger Group, Aegerter & Bosshardt, Gysi Leoni Mader AG and Amstein + Walthert.
The aim is to significantly increase capacity, improve operational stability and lay the foundations for a more frequent rail service.
A project for the ages – and an impressive example of how complex tunnel and infrastructure projects are implemented within existing infrastructure.
