The Blue Line extension project by STM adds five new stations over approx. 6 km, extending the network eastward from Saint-Michel to Anjou. The main alignment is being excavated primarily using a 9.7 m diameter Single Shield TBM and two road headers through the region’s characteristic Trenton limestone, marking a significant transition from the drill-and-blast methods traditionally used in Montreal’s underground network. The design features deep-seated station and the implementation of a precast concrete segmental lining.

The works for the extension of the Montreal Metro’s Blue Line (PLB) are located between the current Saint-Michel station, situated at the junction of Saint-Michel and Shaughnessy Boulevards, and the eastern boundary of the PLB, situated approximately 692 m east of the A25 motorway beneath Châteauneuf Boulevard in Anjou. The PLB route is approximately 6.1 km long and runs mainly beneath Jean-Talon Street East. The route moves away from Jean-Talon Street East after the intersection with Langelier Boulevard to pass beneath Jean-Milot Park, then curves southwards to continue towards Les Galeries d’Anjou and beyond Highway 25.

The works constructed as part of the PLB comprise five (5) metro stations, seven (7) new ancillary structures (SA) and a terminus depot, and include the following works packages:

  1. The sections of the metro tunnel constructed using a tunnel boring machine, comprising five (5) tunnels (T2 to T6) interconnecting the stations and the SA5/Circular Tunnel connection
  2. The SA1 – T1 – Pie-IX sector: this sector includes the refurbishment and extension of the existing SA1 auxiliary structure and its connection to the T1 tunnel, the T1 tunnel itself and the Pie-IX station (main ticket hall, platforms and emergency exit)
  3. The SA2 – Viau – SA3 sector: this sector includes the excavation of three structures, namely the SA2 and SA3 auxiliary structures, including their connecting tunnel to the metro tunnel, and Viau station (main entrance and emergency exit)
  4. Lacordaire station: comprising the excavation of the station (main station building, platforms, emergency exit and the pedestrian passage to the south leading to a secondary station building
  5. Auxiliary structure SA4, including its access tunnel and underground connection to the metro tunnel.
  6. Langelier station; situated halfway between the western and eastern sections of the T5 tunnel
  7. Auxiliary structure SA5, situated between Langelier and Anjou stations and at the start of the T6 tunnel
  8. Anjou station: it is planned to be located beneath the A25 motorway and will include a shaft on either side of it (the western shaft will serve as an exit shaft for the tunnel boring machine excavating T2 to T6)

Other infrastructure forming part of the PLB project but not included within Amberg’s scope:

  1. The Saint-Michel service centre
  2. The secondary portal at Pie-IX station; 6) Tunnel T7, located to the east of Anjou station
  3. Auxiliary structure SA6, located at the far end of the Anjou station back-of-house area (T7)
  4. The Anjou depot (tunnels T8 to T11, including SA7 and the SA workshop)
